How to Get a Scholarship Without IELTS

Which countries and universities waive the English test, what they accept instead, and how to check properly before you assume you qualify.

The English test is one of the most expensive and slowest parts of an application, and a lot of people assume it is unavoidable. It often is not. But the advice circulating online is unreliable, and acting on it without checking is how people lose an application cycle.

The four routes to a waiver

  1. 1Medium of Instruction letter: your university confirms in writing that your degree was taught and examined in English. The most common route for Pakistani and Indian applicants.
  2. 2Country exemption: some institutions exempt applicants from countries where English is an official language of higher education.
  3. 3Alternative tests: Duolingo English Test, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced. Often cheaper and available sooner than IELTS.
  4. 4Interview assessment: a minority of universities assess English during the admission interview instead.

The MOI letter is not universally accepted

Many UK universities accept it; many do not. A few accept it for master's but not for research degrees. Never assume from a forum post that a specific institution accepts one. Email the admissions office and keep the reply.

Countries where this is most common

  • Germany: many English-taught master's accept an MOI letter, particularly at technical universities.
  • Turkey: most government scholarship programmes accept an MOI letter or run their own assessment.
  • Malaysia: widely accepts MOI letters from recognised institutions.
  • China: many CSC-funded programmes accept an MOI letter or a university interview.
  • Poland, Hungary and Romania: frequently accept alternatives, though this varies by institution.

The visa problem people miss

Getting admitted without IELTS does not mean you can get a visa without it. The UK student visa, for example, has its own English requirement that operates separately from the university's. An offer letter is not a visa. Check the immigration rules of the destination country before you decide to skip the test entirely.

How to check properly

  1. 1Find the specific programme page, not the university's general admissions page.
  2. 2Search that page for 'English language requirements'.
  3. 3If a waiver is mentioned, note the exact conditions: how recent the degree must be, which countries qualify, whether it applies to your level of study.
  4. 4Email admissions with your specific situation and keep the written reply.
  5. 5Check the destination country's visa English requirement separately.

When you should just take the test

If you are applying to more than three institutions, or to the UK, US, Australia or Canada, take it. The time you will spend chasing waiver confirmations across multiple universities usually exceeds the time it takes to sit the exam, and a valid score removes an entire category of risk from every application at once.

If you do take it, book early. Scores take one to two weeks to arrive and test centres fill up months ahead in application season.
