How to apply, step by step

Browse the EMJM catalogue
Each joint master's is run by a different university consortium with its own website, requirements and deadline. Start from the official catalogue.

Shortlist two or three programmes
You may apply to up to three EMJM programmes, but only one scholarship can be held. Applying to more than three disqualifies you from all.

Apply on each consortium's own portal
There is no central application. Every consortium runs its own system, and you complete each separately.

Write a motivation letter per programme
Consortia compare notes. A letter that could apply to any programme is transparent and scores badly.

Provide English proficiency evidence
Usually IELTS 6.5 or equivalent, though some consortia set higher requirements or accept alternatives.

Submit well before the deadline
Most EMJM deadlines fall between December and February for a September start.
When to do what
Counting backwards from the deadline. Applications rushed in the final fortnight are the ones that fail.
16 weeks before
Search the catalogue and shortlist a maximum of three programmes.
14 weeks before
Read each consortium's specific admission requirements.
12 weeks before
Book IELTS if you do not hold a valid score.
10 weeks before
Request academic references, you need them for each application.
8 weeks before
Draft a distinct motivation letter for every programme.
5 weeks before
Gather transcripts, degree certificates and translations.
2 weeks before
Submit each application separately and confirm receipt.
What the panel is actually looking for
- Academic fit with the specific consortium's subject focus
- Motivation that shows you understand the multi-country structure
- Readiness to move between countries during the programme
- Relevant prior study in the programme's discipline
Common mistakes to avoid
- Applying to more than three EMJM programmes, which voids every application.
- Assuming one central application covers all programmes.
- Missing that each consortium sets its own deadline, often weeks apart.
- Recycling one motivation letter across programmes with different aims.
- Overlooking the mobility requirement and the visa work it creates.
