How to apply, step by step

1. 1

   Find your country's Fulbright commission

   You apply through the commission or US embassy in your own country, not to a central office. Deadlines and extra requirements are set nationally.

   Confirm your national deadline

   These fall many months before US university deadlines, often a full year before you would start studying.

3. 3

   Sit any required tests

   TOEFL or IELTS for all applicants; GRE or GMAT depending on the field. Book early because seats fill up.

   Write the study objective and personal statement

   Two separate documents doing different jobs: what you intend to study, and who you are. Do not merge them.

5. 5

   Secure three recommendation letters

   From people who have supervised your academic or professional work and can give specific examples.

   Submit and prepare for interview

   Shortlisted candidates are interviewed by a national panel. Expect questions on your return plan.

   University placement

   Fulbright often places you at a US university rather than letting you choose freely. Be honest about your preferences during placement.

When to do what

Counting backwards from the deadline. Applications rushed in the final fortnight are the ones that fail.

1. 24 weeks before

   Locate your national commission and read its specific rules.

2. 20 weeks before

   Book TOEFL/IELTS and GRE if your field requires it.

3. 16 weeks before

   Approach three referees with your CV and study plans.

4. 12 weeks before

   First draft of the study objective and personal statement.

5. 8 weeks before

   Order official transcripts from every institution attended.

6. 4 weeks before

   Final review with an honest reader; confirm referees have submitted.

7. 2 weeks before

   Submit through the national portal.

What the panel is actually looking for

• Academic excellence and clear potential in your field
• Leadership and a record of contributing beyond your own work
• A study plan that could only sensibly be pursued in the US
• Genuine commitment to returning and applying what you learn

Common mistakes to avoid

• Applying directly to the US instead of through your own country's commission.
• Treating the study objective and personal statement as the same document.
• Ignoring the two-year home residency requirement, then being surprised by it.
• Weak referees chosen for seniority rather than knowledge of your work.
• Missing the national deadline, which is far earlier than US admissions deadlines.
