What the scholarship covers

How to apply, step by step

1. 1

   Choose embassy or university recommendation

   Embassy track applications open around April–May; university recommendation runs through a Japanese university that accepts you first.

   Contact your nearest Japanese embassy

   The embassy publishes the exact documents, dates and test subjects for your country.

   Prepare for the written examinations

   Embassy applicants sit tests in subjects such as English, mathematics and Japanese depending on the field.

   Write the research plan

   For postgraduate applicants this is the single most weighted document. Be specific about method, not just topic.

   Approach a prospective supervisor

   Not always required at application, but a letter of provisional acceptance strengthens the case considerably.

   Sit the interview

   Held at the embassy after the written stage, covering your plan and motivation for Japan specifically.

   Await university placement

   Successful candidates are matched to universities, sometimes not their first preference.

Counting backwards from the deadline. Applications rushed in the final fortnight are the ones that fail.

1. 24 weeks before

   Check your embassy's page for the coming cycle's dates.

2. 20 weeks before

   Decide between the embassy and university recommendation routes.

3. 16 weeks before

   Begin the research plan and identify possible supervisors.

4. 12 weeks before

   Start structured preparation for the written examinations.

5. 10 weeks before

   Request recommendation letters from your current institution.

6. 6 weeks before

   Complete the health certificate and gather transcripts.

7. 3 weeks before

   Submit to the embassy, most require physical documents.
