What the scholarship covers

  • CAD 50,000 per year for three years
  • Held at any participating Canadian university
  • No teaching obligation attached
  • Prestigious national recognition

Eligibility requirements

  • Nominated by a Canadian university, you cannot self-apply
  • Pursuing a first doctoral degree
  • Completed no more than 20 months of doctoral study at nomination
  • Minimum first-class average in the last two years of study
  • Open to Canadian and international students alike

Documents you will need

  • Nomination through a Canadian university
  • Research proposal (maximum two pages)
  • Personal leadership statement
  • Two referee assessments
  • Complete transcripts

How to apply, step by step

  1. 1

    Contact a Canadian university first

Vanier nominations come from the university, not from you. Identify a supervisor and department months ahead.

  2. 2

    Secure a supervisor's commitment

Without a faculty member willing to champion your nomination, there is no route into the competition.

  3. 3

    Meet the university's internal deadline

Each institution runs its own selection round, typically several weeks before the national deadline.

  4. 4

    Write the two-page research proposal

Judged on originality and feasibility. Two pages is a hard limit and forces real precision.

  5. 5

    Write the leadership statement

Vanier weights leadership equally with research. Give evidence, not adjectives.

  6. 6

    Arrange referee assessments

Referees submit through the ResearchNet system directly, so brief them early.

When to do what

Counting backwards from the deadline. Applications rushed in the final fortnight are the ones that fail.

  1. 28 weeks before

Email prospective supervisors at Canadian universities.

  2. 22 weeks before

Confirm supervisor support and target department.

  3. 18 weeks before

Ask the university about its internal Vanier deadline.

  4. 14 weeks before

Draft the research proposal within the two-page limit.

  5. 10 weeks before

Write the leadership statement with concrete examples.

  6. 8 weeks before

Brief referees and confirm ResearchNet access.

  7. 4 weeks before

Submit to the university's internal round.

What the panel is actually looking for

  • Academic excellence across your record
  • Research potential and the originality of the proposal
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and potential
  • Fit with the nominating university's research strengths

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Trying to apply directly instead of being nominated by a university.
  • Contacting supervisors weeks rather than months before the deadline.
  • Exceeding the two-page proposal limit and being disqualified.
  • Treating leadership as secondary when it carries equal weight.
  • Having already completed more than 20 months of doctoral study.

Apply to more than one

Even outstanding applicants are rejected for reasons outside their control, quotas, country allocations, a stronger field that year. Shortlist three or four awards you genuinely qualify for and apply to all of them.
